Many believe poker nights are a “boys only” activity. Well, read this article to learn why that can’t be any further than the truth.
Women in Poker
Two distinct pictures come to mind when someone mentions “poker.” One can either imagine a stuffy, poorly-lit room full of smoke and some money on the table, or they can imagine a high-end tournament with pros pushing around stacks of chips with insane values. But on average, most people won’t include a single female player in their mental image.
To be fair, for decades, the full-male image of poker was true. But nowadays, we have a lot of very successful women in poker. So we will choose some of the best (in no particular order) and showcase their accomplishments.
Vanessa Rousso is one of the best poker players in the world. She has managed to get to the World Poker Tour final table twice and has been in 17 money finishes in the World Poker Tour so far. Luckily for her, she was also voted the “sexiest poker player,” which was a lot of help to her, thanks to some big endorsement deals she scored off of her fame. Her endorsements include the famous organization PokerStars, and even GoDaddy. Now, we didn’t want to measure the skill of these poker players through numbers, but we feel that you should probably know how much money they’ve won by playing poker. But when you win over $3.56 million as Vanessa did, the figures might get too important to overlook.
Liv Boeree is another of the most famous women in poker. Boeree started playing professional poker after she took part in the Ultimatepoker.com Showdown back in 2005. And once she has shown her value by excelling at several poker tournaments, she caught the attention of several pro players and was coached by some of the best poker stars around, including Annie Duke, Dave Ulliott, and Phil Hellmuth, the “Poker Brat” himself.
However, the two cards that launched her career upwards were the pocket fives she had when she played against Carlsson back in 2010 in San Remo. That hand brought her 1.25 million euros, which ended up being a big part of her tournament winnings that totaled slightly over $3.57 million.
Barbara Enright is the only woman ever to have made it to the final table of the World Series of Poker main event. Moreover, she was the first female poker player to successfully win three WSOP bracelets. Her incredible career has led to her becoming the first female to get a spot in the Poker Hall of Fame. While she isn’t the biggest earner on the list, the fact that she led the charge and helped women around the world start their poker careers was enough to earn her a place on our list. Also, career winnings of $1.6 million are still quite impressive.
Kathy Liebert is definitely one of the best players around. She has managed to reach the final table of the World Poker Tour six separate times, and in 2005, she finished third in the Borgata Poker Open. Liebert had also won a WSOP bracelet in 2004. Lastly, she has reached an astounding number of 47 money finishes in the World Series of Poker. Over the course of her career, she managed to win over $6.17 million. All in all, this Las Vegas lady is not someone you should take lightly.
Vanessa Selbst is the highest grossing female poker player in the world. And in the men-dominated game of poker, she still manages to be one of the most dominant players ever. She has managed to win three World Series of Poker bracelets, get to eight final tables, and 20 money finishes. She was even at the final table of the World Poker Tour twice.
And remember how we mentioned that Selbst is the highest grossing female poker player? She has won over $11.85 million during her impressive career.
While high-stakes cash games used to only be available to the members of the boy clubs around the world for years, the status quo is definitely changing. These five ladies are just some of the great players that deserve to be mentioned in lists such as this one.
